Catherine Monagle

Responsible for ISFMI management and implementation, Catherine contributes in many ways to the Initiative, most recently leading field consultations in Southern Africa. An Australian national, with a background in both science (ecology) and international law (BScLLB(Hons)LLM), Catherine has more than 15 years experience across the United Nations Secretariat, government, civil society and the legal profession. Her areas of expertise are in international environmental law and policy, particularly concerning the intersection of biodiversity, climate change, trade, human rights and intellectual property, and she is experienced in managing legislative reform and development processes from within government. Catherine feels priveliged to contribute to an initiative which she views as rare in its capacity to protect biodiversity, address climate change and support livelihoods, while actively valuing the scientific knowledge of some of the most ancient living cultures on earth.
